چکیده

The Siluro-Devonian primary radiation of land biotas is the terrestrial equivalent of the much-debated Cambrian "explosion" of marine faunas. Both show the hallmarks of novelty radiations (phenotypic diversity increases much more rapidly than species diversity across an ecologically undersaturated and thus low-competition landscape), and both ended with the formation of evolutionary and ecological frameworks analogous to those of modem ecosystems. Profound improvements in understanding early land plant evolution reflect recent liberations from several research constraints: Cladistic techniques plus DNA sequence data from extant relatives have prompted revolutionary reinterpretations of land plant phylogeny, and thus of systematics and character-state acquisition patterns. Biomechanical and physiological experimental techniques developed for extant 263 0066-4162/98/1120-0263$08.00

Early tetrapod evolution.

Tetrapods include the only fully terrestrial vertebrates, but they also include many amphibious, aquatic and flying groups. They occupy the highest levels of the food chain on land and in aquatic environments. Tetrapod evolution has generated great interest, but the earliest phases of their history are poorly understood. Recent studies have questioned long-accepted hypotheses about the origin o...

The effects of UVB radiation on charophycean algae and bryophytes

This thesis reports on the effects of UVB radiation on charophycean algae and bryophytes. Due to thinning of the ozone layer, more UVB radiation is reaching the earth surface. UVB radiation affects life on earth. Since the discovery of the ozone hole many studies focused on the effects of UV(B) radiation on terrestrial and marine organisms. Studies that focused on the effects on plants showed d...

Multigene phylogeny of land plants with special reference to bryophytes and the earliest land plants.

A widely held view of land plant relationships places liverworts as the first branch of the land plant tree, whereas some molecular analyses and a cladistic study of morphological characters indicate that hornworts are the earliest land plants. To help resolve this conflict, we used parsimony and likelihood methods to analyze a 6, 095-character data set composed of four genes (chloroplast rbcL ...

Evolution of the life cycle in land plants

All sexually reproducing eukaryotes have a life cycle consisting of a haploid and a diploid phase, marked by meiosis and syngamy (fertilization). Each phase is adapted to certain environmental conditions. In land plants, the recently reconstructed phylogeny indicates that the life cycle has evolved from a condition with a dominant free-living haploid gametophyte to one with a dominant free-livi...

Did Terrestrial Diversification of Amoebas (Amoebozoa) Occur in Synchrony with Land Plants?

Evolution of lineage diversification through time is an active area of research where much progress has been made in the last decade. Contrary to the situation in animals and plants little is known about how diversification rates have evolved in most major groups of protist. This is mainly due to uncertainty about phylogenetic relationships, scarcity of the protist fossil record and the unknown...
